Needle felting has been a passion of mine for quite awhile. I have experimented with different techniques, materials and forms. One technique that has so many possibilities is needle felting on a silk scarf.

Needle Felting on a Silk Scarf provides detailed instructions with some added ideas of things you can do with the scarf beyond the joy of wearing your unique, one of a kind creation. Instructions are $5.

The pink and green scarf on the left was one of my first scarves felted with a felting needle. It was worn considerably, has been handled in the shop for a couple of years and still looks good. Only one ounce of roving was used; it is very light weight and drapey.
The vest is made of two scarves with 3 1/2 ounces of roving needle felted on them.

100% Silk white 8 mm scarves are 11 inches by 60 inches with hand rolled and hand sewn seams.
White undyed silk scarf is $4.50

The scarf should be 8mm 100% habotai silk; like the designer scarves sold in stores. The silk gauze used for wet felting is too fragile for the felting needles. Synthetic materials (polyester) have not worked for me. The scarf may be dyed which adds an interesting background color, especially if you are using white fiber. Dyeing is not difficult and the dyed scarf allows you to use very little fiber and still have a colorful piece, perfect to try out the really expensive fibers in small amounts; you don't need to cover the full scarf. See more information on the Jacquard Dyes.

Another idea for the needle felted silk scarf is to make it into a purse; the lining is already there.
